As consumers become more fickle and internet shopping becomes a way of life, retailers need to become more innovative if they’re to get more people walking through their shop front.

I did a story on RICARDO’S BUSINESS for SBS online a while back about the ‘retail experience’ which Costco was pushing to become successful, and it’s no different for service industries.

Let’s get this out of the way, the guys at Atlantis Hair in Paddington do my hair, but they’re incorporating technology into their salon to create a new experience and customer environment.

For example, along with magazines they offer you an iPad to read. QR codes are scattered throughout the salon to encourage digital interactivity. There’s wireless available to clients. They’re working on mobile transaction technology to eliminate the need for a ‘register station’. And they use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter effectively to engage with new and potential clients.

Creative director, Alan Buki told me that it’s all about creating an experience, just like when you walk into an Apple store.

On top of the high end services which the company provides, they’ve also spent time sending their staff to learn how to make proper coffee, offer herbal organic tea and have a deal with Nudie Juice to display and offer their clients free drinks.

While at the end of the day, it’s the actual hair service that drives the business, the extras add to the customer experience which Atlantis hopes will differentiate it from other salons, and will keep customers coming back.

My point? It’s a company that has adopted new technology to move with the times and has identified the changing consumer environment and moved along with it. A lesson other goods and service retailers should follow to stay competitive.

Tried & Tested – O&M CCT Clear Gloss Treatment at Atlantis Hair

Last Friday I visited Original & Mineral’s flagship salon in Paddington, Atlantis Hair for some primping and pampering during my lunch break.  Because I am in the never ending process of growing out my natural hair colour (about half way there!), I booked in for an O&M CCT Clear Gloss treatment and blow wave.  I was so excited to be getting this treatment as I was told that Miranda Kerr and Erika Heynatz have popped in for the same treatment just recently.  Miranda even tweeted about her experience in August saying: “@atlantishair thank you so much for my awesome treatment xxx”.

Formulated with cutting edge hair colour technology, Liquid CCT is a collection of 28 brilliant, high-gloss shades and is designed to enhance natural colour, add luminous tones and depth, grey blending and is perfect for colour correction work.  All shades of O&M Liquid CCT Colours are intermixable and include a clear shade, Liquid CCT Clear, which doubles as a colour enhancer and tone moderator.  O&M Liquid CCT Colours can achieve pastel toning on lightened hair and will blend up to 50% grey.

Enriched with antioxidant Tasmania Sea Kelp, Liquid CCT’s formula also contains a unique blend of nourishing Macadamia and Argan oils to leave the hair feeling soft, healthy and glossy.  Best of all the CCT colours contain no ammonia and no odour, just pure, shiny colour which makes the colouring experience more pleasurable for the client and working environment more healthy for the colourist.

The verdict…
After the #gaspfail event went viral we have all been paying closer attention to the customer service we receive at stores, restaurants and other service providers, or at least I have anyway.  As a consumer I expect good customer service where ever I go, but more often then not I am disappointed with my experience and leave feeling a little less satisfied then I should.  But once in a while, every now and then, you encounter an experience which leaves you feeling warm, happy, appreciated and satisfied…

My yummo Nudie Cha Cha Cha Crushie
The Atlantis Hair drinks menu

When I first arrived at Atlantis Hair I was warmly greeted and escorted to my seat by one of the lovely ladies on the floor.  As my jacket was being taken I was asked if I wanted anything to drink, I said I already had a water bottle and was asked if I wanted a Nudie juice instead, my eyes lit up and I quickly responded with a keen “yes please”.  I was then taken over to the little bar fridge where I was encouraged to select which flavour Nudie juice I wanted and true to form I chose the Nudie Cha Cha Cha Crushie – my fave!  When I got comfy in my chair, I took a look around and realised that there was a drinks menu beside all of the mirrors for the customers to browse with organic herbal teas, coffee, juice and organic wines.  Shortly after getting comfy my stylist, Wayne Lewis came over introduced himself and talked me through the treatment I would be having for the day and got to applying the CCT Clear Gloss.

The CCT Clear Gloss was applied to my hair, root to tip, as you would apply a colour and my hair was then wrapped in gladwrap for a while to give the CCT goodness a chance to penetrate my hair and do its magic.  While I was waiting looking stunning all gladwrapped up I was asked if I wanted another drink, so I got a cheeky wine and with that came a little snack also.

A short while later it was time for the treatment to be rinsed out with some more lovely O&M products.  I am fairly certain that the detox range was used to wash and condition, which smelt like peppermint and then the O&M Seven Day Miracle Moisture Masque was applied and massaged into my scalp (I LOVE scalp massages).  The Seven Day Miracle Moisture Masque has won the Fellowship for Australian Hairdressing award, I won’t give too much away on the product because I plan to do a proper review soon, but it is stunning and smells like coconut – summer in a bottle!

The Atlantis Hair salon busy at work

My hair was then blow waved and I quickly rushed back to work.  The overall experience was fantastic.  Everyone who worked at the salon was warm, kind and happy to be at work, none of it put on it just really reflected in the overall vibe of the place and working environment.  If I lived in Sydney Atlantis Hair would easily be my regular salon of choice, you really cannot get taken care of much better then I did.  I had at least 10 people comment on how lovely my hair looked when I got back to work which was nice.  After the treatment I didn’t notice too much difference in my hair, but the next time I washed my hair it seemed to feel silkier then usual and my curls were more prominent which happens when my hair is healthy.

Rating:
4/5

If you live close by to Sydney CBD I suggest popping into Paddington and giving Atlantis Hair a visit, I assure you you will not be disappointed.

Love Miss Green

Meet the Stylists!

April 29, 2011

Atlantis Hair has welcomed a duo of new stylists into the fold and we’d like to introduce them. Meet Robert Hicks and Emily Brown, Atlantis Hair’s new emerging stylists.

Identifying Emily on Atlantis Hair’s busy salon floor is easy — her hair is platinum blonde, short and curly. Emily, 20, spent her childhood in Port Macquarie and has made Sydney her home in the past few years. An all-rounder in cutting, colouring and styling, Emily names styling as her favourite part of the job, and says she’s obsessed with ‘big, bouncy hair’ for winter.

Who inspires you in hair? Vidal Sassoon because he is an amazing precision cutter, and Australian-born Joey Scandizzo because he does wonderfully creative collections that are different every time.

What are your favourite Original & Mineral products for achieving big, bouncy hair? A combination of Rootalicious and Atonic.

What colours would you love to do in your clients hair this winter? Warm gold blondes, caramels and chocolate browns.

Where are you if you are not on the salon floor? Out and about with friends – I’m a social butterfly.

Who would be your dream client? English model Agyness Deyn – I’d love to style her hair for a shoot for British Vogue.

Emily Brown

Robert is 28, and originally hails from Bathurst. He discovered a passion for hairdressing by accident – after undertaking a pre-apprenticeship course he discovered a passion for styling. In our interview Robert outlines how he admires the surreal work of Salvatore Dali and is feeling a rich red colour for winter.

What do you love about hairdressing? Colouring because the results are so visible.

What colours would you love to do on clients this winter? A combination of richer browns and reds

What is your signature look you do in hair? Solid, straight lines – simplicity in hair.

What inspires your work? I admire the work of American hairstylist Robert Lobetta and the surrealism of Salvador Dali.

Where do you see yourself in a decade? Hopefully owning my own salon or working abroad!
