“We used a ballyage technique to lighten her ends using the O&M Keratin Lightener which gives a lighter look to the ends going through to a natural root. We then toned her hair using the Mineral CCT colour in a 66/46 double-pigmented red with 1.5% activator. We then sealed her hair with an O&M Seven Day Miracle treatment that can be used religiously. This hair treatment will leave the hair deeply moved as a result of its unique blend of Australian native oils,” says Wayne Lewis, Technical Director for Original & Mineral and Colour Director for Atlantis Hair.

“Her hair was styled using lashing of Atonic Thickening Spritz and Surf Bomb Sea Salt Spray mixed together and blow-dried into the hair in large sections of hair that were then tonged with a H2D hair today curling wand. “To achieve Lisa’s hair colour, we used Original & Minerals’ 100% Ammonia Free Blue Pearl Lightener.  We then added carefully placed foils and did large panels to create depth. We then dried this off, colouring some ballyage pieces from mid-lengths to ends followed by using a toner from O&M’s latest generation of permanent colour – Mineral CCT – 10/8 which is the lightest pearl colour,” says Wayne Lewis, Technical Director for Original & Mineral and Colour Director for Atlantis Hair.

“To create Lisa’s soft, feminine but edgy cut and style, we cut her hair quite short at the nape of her neck and longer towards the front of her head giving it almost an asymmetrical look. “To colour Emma’s hair we used Original & Mineral’s Ammonia Free Blue Pearl Lightener with a 9% activator. We then ballyaged the hair starting at the nape of her neck, leaving the hair to process for 25 minutes. We then shampooed the hair and on damp hair applied O&M’s new Mineral CCT Tonner in the lightest pearl ash that is a 10/8. This was left on the hair for 10 minutes followed by a conditioning treatment, using O&M’s Hydrate and Conquer, as this is our most nourishing conditioner,” says Wayne Lewis, Technical Director for Original & Mineral and Colour Director for Atlantis Hair.

“For styling, we sprayed a combination of O&M’s Atonic Thickening Spritz and No Knott conditioning detangler using a paddle brush to give it a smooth finish. “I rarely know what do with my hair nor do I give it much attention. The reason that I love having Emily Brown as my hairdresser is that she cares more about my head than I do. Senior Stylist Emily Brown tells us how to recreate Danny’s latest haircut and colour.

“For colour, I have done a ballayage through the ends to give it a beachy, relaxed and sun-kissed look. To achieve this look, you use seaweed lightener with 9% activator and then we rinse this off. We then used Original & Mineral’s Original Detox Shampoo to lift off any dirt from the hair, followed by Maintain The Mane Conditioner to rehydrate the ends. The colour was inspired by Danny who was open to exploring some new colour as well as creating a look that embodied a cool essence.

Then for styling, I used Original & Mineral’s Surf Bomb Sea Salt Spray to create a natural beach, down-to-earth look and blasted the hair dry and used some K-Gravel Texture Clay to finish the look. To create actress Isabelle Lucas’s hairstyle Cameron married her hairstyle with the celebrity’s iconic boho-chic style channeling the “less is more” look. To create Isabelle’s natural, loose and carefree hairstyle, Cameron used O&M’s Atonic thickening spritz to build up volume at the roots and O&M’s Surf Bomb sea salt spray throughout mid-length ends.

Minka Kelly’s hairstyle was transformed using a combination of O&M’s Rootalicious root lift and Surf Bomb sea salt spry on dry hair from roots to end. Hair was then blow-dried in and sectioned with a large tong, shaken through and loosened up. To finish the look, Cameron used O&M’s new hero style product “Original Queenie” to set and hold for lights, camera and action.

Yummy mummy Ashlee Simpson’s sleek, polished but understated cool hairstyle was created using a number of O&M’s hero style products. Using a combination of Frizzy Logic shine serine and K-Gravel texture clay, Cameron was able to sleek back Ashlee’s hair on the left-hand-side. A blend of O&M’s Atonic thickening spritz and Surf Bomb sea salt spray was blasted throughout the right side of Ashlee’s look creating texture, locking the final look in with Original Queenie.

As consumers become more fickle and internet shopping becomes a way of life, retailers need to become more innovative if they’re to get more people walking through their shop front.

I did a story on RICARDO’S BUSINESS for SBS online a while back about the ‘retail experience’ which Costco was pushing to become successful, and it’s no different for service industries.

Let’s get this out of the way, the guys at Atlantis Hair in Paddington do my hair, but they’re incorporating technology into their salon to create a new experience and customer environment.

For example, along with magazines they offer you an iPad to read. QR codes are scattered throughout the salon to encourage digital interactivity. There’s wireless available to clients. They’re working on mobile transaction technology to eliminate the need for a ‘register station’. And they use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter effectively to engage with new and potential clients.

Creative director, Alan Buki told me that it’s all about creating an experience, just like when you walk into an Apple store.

On top of the high end services which the company provides, they’ve also spent time sending their staff to learn how to make proper coffee, offer herbal organic tea and have a deal with Nudie Juice to display and offer their clients free drinks.

While at the end of the day, it’s the actual hair service that drives the business, the extras add to the customer experience which Atlantis hopes will differentiate it from other salons, and will keep customers coming back.

My point? It’s a company that has adopted new technology to move with the times and has identified the changing consumer environment and moved along with it. A lesson other goods and service retailers should follow to stay competitive.

Identifying Emily on Atlantis Hair’s busy salon floor is easy — her hair is platinum blonde, short and curly. Emily, 20, spent her childhood in Port Macquarie and has made Sydney her home in the past few years. An all-rounder in cutting, colouring and styling, Emily names styling as her favourite part of the job, and says she’s obsessed with ‘big, bouncy hair’ for winter.

Who inspires you in hair? Vidal Sassoon because he is an amazing precision cutter, and Australian-born Joey Scandizzo because he does wonderfully creative collections that are different every time.

What are your favourite Original & Mineral products for achieving big, bouncy hair? A combination of Rootalicious and Atonic.

What colours would you love to do in your clients hair this winter? Warm gold blondes, caramels and chocolate browns.

Where are you if you are not on the salon floor? Out and about with friends – I’m a social butterfly.

Who would be your dream client? English model Agyness Deyn – I’d love to style her hair for a shoot for British Vogue.

Robert is 28, and originally hails from Bathurst. He discovered a passion for hairdressing by accident – after undertaking a pre-apprenticeship course he discovered a passion for styling. In our interview Robert outlines how he admires the surreal work of Salvatore Dali and is feeling a rich red colour for winter.

What do you love about hairdressing? Colouring because the results are so visible.

What colours would you love to do on clients this winter? A combination of richer browns and reds

What is your signature look you do in hair? Solid, straight lines – simplicity in hair.

What inspires your work? I admire the work of American hairstylist Robert Lobetta and the surrealism of Salvador Dali.

Where do you see yourself in a decade? Hopefully owning my own salon or working abroad!
